Long before ipods and itunes, this is how playlists were created. Back then they were called mix tapes. A lot of thought went into these tapes. You couldn't just sit down, drag and drop thirty songs in a moments notice to create a mix as you can now. Back then you literally had to record each song one at a time onto a tape and you put a lot of thought into the order the songs were arranged in. John Cusack's film High Fidelity can give you much greater insight into this concept if you're really interested. It's a great movie which came out just prior to the explosion of digital music.
